Live like no one else now, so you can live like no one else later
For the second year, now, my family and I—all seven of us—are looking forward to attending the Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s Holiday Pops concert. It’s a big deal, and we aren’t getting cheap seats. We’re going to sit in the row the arrow’s pointing to. Those aren’t cheap seats; there’s only one ticket more expensive than the ones we buy.
But before that, we’re going to let the kids pick out the fine dining establishment we have dinner at. Last year, we went to Fort Wayne’s oldest restaurant, and everyone gets to order whatever he or she wants. If the eight-year old wants the filet mignon, he gets it; if the 12-year old wants the lobster ravioli, she gets it. The night will cost us the equivalent of a mid-range iPad
…and we’ll pay cash.
Dave Ramsey is known for saying, “if you’ll live like no one else now, you’ll live like no one else later,” and our Holiday Pops tradition is a microcosm of this principle at work. I have a zero-fee online bank account set up, and every two weeks a small piece of my pay gets shunted into that account, and to the extent that we have to forgo that spending now, we live like no one else now. But, by the end of the year, those shunted funds allow us live like no one else; we pay cash for an extravagant holiday tradition.
